Why a Texas six-man football game can end in the third quarter
A documented Gordon championship touchdown explains the 45-point rule, while UIL's small-school divisions put the format in context.

Gordon's Stryker Reed ran 44 yards for a touchdown with 6:46 left in the third quarter of the December 17, 2025, Class 1A Division I championship at AT&T Stadium.[1] That was the game's final play: Gordon beat Rankin 69-22, and the official box score says the 45-point mercy rule ended the contest.[1]
Under the University Interscholastic League's six-player rules effective August 28, 2026, a game ends if one team leads by at least 45 points at halftime or reaches that margin during the second half.[2] Reaching 45 points on the scoreboard is insufficient; the rule concerns the difference between the teams' scores.[2]
Timing matters, too. The rule does not call for an immediate ending when a team builds that lead during the first quarter or earlier in the second.[2] Its first checkpoint is the end of the first half.[2]
UIL's classification table for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years lists 159 football schools in Class 1A, divided between 79 in Division I and 80 in Division II.[3] Those are football participation counts for the stated alignment cycle, not the number of players on those teams.[3]
The enrollment bands are narrow: Division I runs from 57.6 to 104.9, while Division II covers 57.5 and below.[3] Readers looking up a school should keep the school-year labels attached to those numbers. The current table describes a different alignment cycle from the December 2025 championship.
Class 1A is larger than its football list. The same table contains 223 schools overall, with separate participation counts for basketball, football and volleyball.[3] A school's classification alone therefore does not establish that it fields a football team.[3]
The six-player rules specify an 80-by-40-yard field unless using an eleven-man field is necessary.[2] Quarters last 10 minutes, and an offense normally needs 15 yards in four downs for a first down.[2]
After a touchdown, a successful place kick or drop kick earns two points; a successful run or pass earns one.[2] A field goal is worth four.[2]
Gordon's 2025 championship score sheet supplies a useful example. Late in the second quarter, Reed scored on a 12-yard run and Hudson Campbell added a rushing conversion, moving Gordon's total from 48 to 55.[1] The halftime score was 55-16.[1]
Rankin scored first after the break on a 15-yard pass from Gage Lopez to Issac Armendarez, cutting the score to 55-22 after a failed kick.[1] Gordon then answered with a 42-yard touchdown pass from Noah Kostiha to Ry Reed and a successful kick, taking the score to 63-22.[1]
The last entry is Reed's 44-yard touchdown at 6:46.[1] The box score records the final at 69-22 and lists scoring for only three quarters.[1] There was no fourth quarter to fill in.
